General Questions

What is an Internet Service Provider (ISP)?

An ISP provides a way to get connected to the Internet. The ISP usually charges a monthly fee for their service. The most common methods to access the internet through an ISP is with a cable or DSL modem. If you are connecting with a mobile phone, then your ISP is also your wireless provider.

What is a server?

A server is a computer located on the Internet 24 hours a day that stores your “Files” so that other people are able to view your web site. Without a server you would have to be your own host and let people into your computer to see your pages (not to mention the extraordinary cost of running special connections to your computer). A good reliable server is essential for your website. If you intend to have people view your site, the server must be capable of handling all the requests in a timely manner. If a server goes “Down” people have no access and, consequently, you stand the chance of losing business.

Are other services available?

Elehost Web Design Inc.’s services cover every aspect of the web designing process should you need our help. This includes information consultation, web development, web site management and marketing, search engine promotion, education and training, and e-commerce solutions. We pride ourselves on being highly skilled and knowledgeable about today’s computer technology. Our highest priority is to provide you, our valued customer, with the resources to experience an endless spectrum of possibilities, leading you and your business on the road to success.

What can I put on my website?

Generally, most sites have text, company logo art, other visual renderings such as sketches and drawings, graphics, product images, and other images. It is almost completely up to you what you choose to place on your pages, as long as it does not violate our terms and conditions that you agreed upon when signing up with us.

Do you allow adult content?

Elehost Web Design Inc. does not permit the hosting of adult content sites. These types of web sites are in clear violation of our Terms of Services:

“Elehost expressly forbids anyone from using Elehost servers for the propagation, distribution, housing, processing, storing, or otherwise handling in any way lewd, obscene, or pornographic material, or any other material which we deem to be objectionable, including, but not limited to, pornography, satanic and hate related materials, slanderous, illegal, offensive and any and all materials of an adult nature.”

That means you agree not to store, transmit, link to, advertise or make available any images containing this type of material.

How long does it take to set up a new account?

Accounts are usually set up and active within a few hours of contacting us. When the account is set up, an activation notice will be sent to you via e-mail including a user ID, password, and uploading instructions. If your domain name is registered or transferred on the same day of signup, upon request, we can give you a temporary URL to access your site via the Web prior to the completion of either the domain registration or transfer.

Do you offer personal access to the Internet?

No, Elehost is not an Internet Service provider (ISP).  You will need local Internet access in order to view websites and to retrieve e-mail addressed to you. Providing a specialized service means that we do not have hundreds of modems to take care of, enabling us to devote more time to our customers. Our web servers are dedicated solely to web site hosting to guarantee a high level of performance at a very affordable price.

What is FTP?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol), a standard Internet protocol, is the simplest way to exchange files between computers on the Internet. FTP is commonly used to transfer Web page files from their creator to the computer that acts as their server for everyone on the Internet.

What is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol design by Netscape Communications to enable encrypted, authenticated communications across the Internet. SSL is used mostly (but not exclusively) in communication between web browsers and web servers. Url’s that begin with “https” indicate that an SSL connection will be used. SSL provides three important things: privacy, authentication, and message integrity. In an SSL connection, the session between the person browsing and the server (where your web page is) is secured so that the information you enter can not be intercepted by third parties.

Web Hosting Plans and Program Questions

What is web hosting?

Every website on the internet has a server computer which acts as a “host”. This host computer is connected to the internet 24 hours a day. It stores all of the webpage (html) files, graphics and any other items your site may contain so that your webpage and all its contents are available to be accessed by users worldwide at all times.

How much will my website hosting cost?

The fee is subject to the type of package and support you require. Although pricing is usually contingent upon a pre-set package, these packages can be customized to suit your needs. Elehost Web Design Inc. recognizes that not all web sites require the same features and we will be happy to come up with a positive solution to suit your specific needs. Domain Questions

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a friendly Internet name address that provides an easy way for you to locate people, computers, and resources on the internet (i.e. yourcompany.com). A domain name is a part of a computer hierarchical numbering system that represent IP numbers. IP numbers or addresses are used by computers to find other computers on the Internet. For example, The IP address for yourcompany.com will look like this: 207.158.200.127

Each IP address has four sets of numbers separated by periods. IP addresses range from 4 to 12 digits. Each set of numbers range in value from 0 to 255. Since names are easier to remember than four sets of numbers, the domain name systems was devised.

What are the specifications for a domain name?

While the total length of a domain name may be up to sixty-four (64) characters including the .com, the only characters allowed are letters, digits (numbers), and the dash (-). A domain name cannot, however, begin or end with a dash. The “www” which almost always comes before the domain name in a web-site address is not, in fact, part of the domain name. It has simply become a standard practice to write “www.” in front of a domain name. Domain names can be registered with any ICANN accredited Registrar. However, you can register a domain name through Elephant Host.com. We use the ICANN accredited Registrar NameSilo and we can help with every aspect of the domain registration process.

What is domain parking?

Domain parking is a service to reserve (park) a domain name for later use. This is useful when you want to get a specific domain before someone else does, or when your web site requires some time for development.

How do I know if my domain name is still available?

Click here to perform a domain name lookup within our web site. This will search the InterNIC database to see if the domain name you would like to use for your new website has already been registered.

How long before my domain name is active?

Once the InterNIC announces that your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes anywhere from 24-72 hours before it is visible to all users of the Internet. All Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect new site locations.

How long does a domain registration last? Can it be renewed?

You can choose to pay for your domain name for 1 year at a time or to register it in advance for up to ten years. You need to renew your domain before it expires for the website and email to continue to function without interruption.

Will I be able to access my domain name with and without the www?

Yes, we set up your account configuration so both www.yourname.com and yourname.com will bring up your web site. We recommend only using one for your public profile and have the other entry redirect automatically.

What is a domain name pointer?

A domain name pointer allows you to point multiple domain names to the same website. This means if you type in www.domain1.com and www.domain2.com you will end up on the same web site. It is sometimes used to handle similar spellings of a set of domain names so that all combinations work and load the same website.

Email Questions

What is an autoresponder?

An autoresponder will automatically reply to any e-mail sent to a particular address. For example, if you have an autoresponder for the address of sales@yourname.com any incoming e-mail message sent to this address will automatically be replied to by a web robot. This robot will send back a form message that you set up. Among other things, this is useful for creating “request more information” e-mail addresses.

Technical Questions

Do your support Microsoft Frontpage?

No. Microsoft Frontpage was discontinued in 2006. The server extensions that Microsoft Frontpage depended on have been phased out by Microsoft, and it is no longer recommended that sites be built in this platform.

What are CGI scripts?

A script is a program or sequence of instructions that is interpreted or carried out by another program rather than by the computer processor. CGI (Common Gateway Interface) is a standard for interfacing external applications with information servers, such as HTTP or Web servers. A plain HTML document is static, which means it exists in a constant state: a text file that doesn’t change. A CGI program, on the other hand, is executed in real-time, so that it can output dynamic information. Common CGI features are “hit” counters, redirection and on-the-fly generation of Web pages, database queries, guest books or feed back forms. CGI is a consistent way for data to be passed from the user’s request to the application program and back to the user.

Can I establish SSL on my website?

Yes, contingent upon the hosting package you have signed up for. This protocol can be very useful for clients who intend on sending sensitive information (e.g. personal information or credit card information) through their web site.

Do I need my own secure certificate to have SSL?

Yes.  You can order GeoTrust secure certificates from Elehost, or you can request a file, called a Certificate Signing Request (.csr) file from Elehost, and you can use that to purchase a secure certificate from any SSL provider. If you are not sure how to do this, don’t worry! That is what we are here for.

What databases do you currently support?

We currently support MySQL and MSSQL databases. We can also help to integrate with your back end database system if you used a different platform.
